Terra

The documentary Terra is a French documentary that raises awareness of humans abuse of animal land and there exclusion from us. During the documentary the narrator focuses on the idea that we are constantly getting more distant from are animal counterparts and therefor pushing them out of there land and replacing it with are own.

Before watching the documentary I knew that we have been constantly pushing animals away from us. I’ve seen powerful images of animals in awful conditions that made me semi-aware of the problem. With my prior knowledge I expected to not be surprised by there images and arguments. Therefore I had know questions prior to watching the documentary.

During the documentary It showed humans relationship with animals and how it has changed us, but more importantly how we affect animals and drive them away. Its main point is that we are forcing animals away from there normal living grounds and replacing there land with farm land and buildings for are gain only.  Terra shows powerful images of animals being abused and poached. It also gives a basic history of life on Earth and how humans naturally moved away from them.

The documentary used persuasive devices to convince you that there is a problem. They use powerful images to make you feel piddy for these animals. For example they use the image of a helicopter carrying a blindfolded rhino which has been tied upside down. They also film animals in a way that lets you see there perspectives of confusion and fear.

The Music in Terra is also used to great effect. They use dramatic and almost operatic music to add suspense and drama almost like a television show. It uses statistics to make the watcher feel like it is a emideat problem. They also use rhetoric questions to make the watcher contemplate. For example “What will happen to them?” or “what will we become without them?”

Terra also uses the history of evolution as well as science to explain how humans and other animals rely on each other for survival. It uses scientific evidences to explain that we need to put animals in a normal environment for them to thrive. For example, Terra shrutenises us for how we treat livestock by putting them in small spaces not letting them “live”.

Overall it was a enjoyable documentary to watch, with persuasive arguments that made me feel pity for the animals. The camera work was fanominale, it made animals look beautiful as well as sad and distrest. The film used camera angles that almost made you feel like you where the animal felling its suffering. The film did not have interview, which meant most of facts and narration were done by the narrator. Overall it was a great documentary which I would recommend to watch.
