‘The True Cost’ is a documentary that explores abuse of sweatshop works in making high priced fashion and goods. The documentary wants to educate the watch about the abuse sweatshop workers face in the expensive fashion industry.
Before watching the documentary I had known about sweatshop workers being overworked, particularly in places like Central American and East Asia. I had always seen those images of people slaving away to make products that could be sold for hundreds of dollars. My only question that I had before watching the documentary was was “how far has the industry gone to make workers lives miserable”
The true prise covered disasters all over the world that had been caused by safety standards being ignored. Business executives, workers, and activists are interviewed for there perspectives.
To convince the viewer the documentary primarily uses interviews and specific events. As stated they interview multiple business executives that tell about how competitive the market is. They interview works who tell of the horrible conditions they work in every day for pocket change. They interview activists who offer somewhat easy solutions to these problems. Then these interview are happening they try to demonise the large corporations. For example “Make it for 3$ or we will take are business somewhere else.
Most of the workers they interviewed had been in terrible accidents where they were scared for life. They show many images of these events as well as the deaths which could be in the hundreds. The images they show are meant to make the viewer feel sad and pity for these people working for pennies a hour under these conditions.
The camera work was phenomenal which added to the mood the film was wanting to set .the music they used gave a eerie feeling and sadness. I would recommend watching 100% percent.
